Mission
The unit focuses on the study of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, as well as other skin conditions related to the risk of developing these cancers. The aim is to improve the prevention, early diagnosis and achievement of a more personalized treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. The studies that the group carried out, they were able to improve the early diagnosis of skin cancer, reducing the number of benign lesions removed and diagnosing thin melanomas with a good prognosis. In addition, he described the main melanoma susceptibility genes in the population and identified several molecular prognostic markers useful in clinical practice. With the group's new lines of research, it is intended to improve the classification of patients into specific prognosis groups to improve management and treatment. aims to identify prognostic and predictive biomarkers. cancer is the most common cancer in humans, and of the various common skin cancers, melanoma is the most aggressive and has the worst prognosis. Sun exposure habits and aging populations are a growing problem in Western societies today. Research Activity
The translational research activity takes place in the context of clinical activity. All components play a specific role in the design and development of the research study with different roles depending on the specific skills of the professional. At the Department of Oncology Dermatology, clinical research studies, evaluations and protocols of new therapies are designed and performed, as well as in vivo microscopic and molecular research studies, in collaboration with the other IFO unit and national and international centers.
Clinical trials on melanoma and non-melamoma skin cancer and non-invasive skin diagnostic techniques are currently active at the centers.
Every year the research group publishes articles in international indexed journals. Active participation in research committees and national and international conferences is regularly carried out by the research staff.
